When I was in the public school system homosexuality was not at all an issue, due to the fact that nobody was openly gay at all, one kid claimed he was, but it turned out he only did it as a joke. But when I went to my 5 year reunion, some of my classmates (men and women) were openly gay and it turned out that they were gay in school but to afraid of being ridiculed to be open about it. No it seems more and more prevalent in schools today and it's not something I'm against, but it is something I will have to get use to when I become a teacher.

There are more gay-straight alliences now-a-days, but I am sure that there are still a lot of people who are afraid of "comming out." I think it is difficult for people to go from being in a majority, where they don't have to worry about ridicule, to going into a minority where they may be mad fun of or harrassed.
ReplyDeleteBart, I can relate to this exactly. This is what happened to me when I went to my class reunion too. It's funny because the two gay men always hung out with us girls, but we didn't know they were gay. I still love them and actually enjoyed seeing them and chatting with them. It's a no wonder they were the only two who actually got up and danced with us girls as a group. We had fun with them. I do feel a little awkward about it and the thought of the two men being together is hard for me. It should be easier after this class to understand gayness and accept it better. This class is opening my eyes to alot of social issues.
